How to get a passport?
Getting a passport is still a common question for many people. There are agencies specialized in this service. Check if the exchange agency can help you with the passport. But don't worry because it's not difficult.
There are some countries that Brazilians do not need a passport to visit for tourism. Do you know which ones?
- Argentina
- Bolívia;
- Colômbia;
- Chile;
- Peru;
- Equador;
- Paraguai;
- Uruguai.
Remember that to live, work, and study, you may need an authorization or visa. Please confirm with the exchange agency or do some research. But I recommend getting a passport anyway, as it is an essential document for those who want to travel and explore different countries.
So, let's go. You need to get your passport and don't know how. Don't worry, I'll explain.
How to Get Your Passport
The process is generally not complicated, and the good news is that most of it is done online.
Passport fees change according to adjustments, but R$ 257.25 was the price established in 2022 for obtaining a passport for the first time.
The amount is not too high, but many people need to plan and set aside the amount to get the passport.
Let's say you don't want to spend on consultancy to get your passport and want to do everything on your own. Follow the step-by-step tips, and you will have no complications.
1. Gather all the documents for your passport application. Remember that your documents must be valid, in good condition, and legible.
- Birth certificate (Can be used as identification for children under 12 years);
- ID, driver's license, or work card. It's important to have a document that proves your place of birth.
- CPF;
- Proof of GRU fee payment;
- Voter registration for precaution. Keep the receipts that prove you have fulfilled your duty as a Brazilian citizen.
2. To start the process, you need to apply online on the Federal Police website;
https://www.gov.br/pf/pt-br/assuntos/passaporte/ola
3. Please carefully fill in all the requested data, review to ensure nothing is missing;
4. After filling in all the fields, you must finalize the step for the payment slip (GRU) to be generated;
5. Take the amount you reserved to pay for the passport, and please pay the GRU before the due date.
6. You will be notified that the payment has been made. With this payment confirmation, you can schedule your visit to the Federal Police Station near your city. The scheduling is also done directly on the Federal Police website.
7. Mark the day of your appointment on your calendar. Plan how you will get to the location (car, bus, subway, train, boat, etc.).
8. Remember to bring the proof of payment with you.
9. Dress appropriately as you will be taking a passport photo.
10. Try to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time.
11. Upon arrival, present the requested documents and the proof of payment for the GRU fee.
12. They will take your fingerprints and passport photo.
Phew! One less worry if you have managed to follow all these steps.
After completing this process to obtain your passport, you will have to wait for it to be ready. Ask about the timeframe on the day, as demand has increased post-pandemic, and the process has been lengthy.
Once you receive notification that your passport is ready, the Federal Police gives you a period of up to 90 days to collect it from the station.
REMINDER
Check the status of your passport because they will discard it if you do not pick it up within the stipulated period. We cannot forget that all of this is a money-making business. So, they discard passports to be requested again and charge another fee.
